What's up freaks? T-Bone here with my newest pick of the month. The field is getting bigger
and trying to pick my favorite CD is harder than ever since they are all worth mentioning.
However, I had to go with a band that inspires me and one that I respect very much. This
month's pick is Megadeth's The World Needs A Hero (Sanctuary, 2001)
The new CD features 12 new tracks, taking a direction back into their old metal roots and even
bringing back "Vic Rattlehead" to appear on the cover. The cover features front man Dave
Mustaine lying in a pool of blood with Vic protruding from his chest. To me, this suggests
that the old Megadeth has been reborn and are ready to piss even more people off. The cover
has already been banned in Walmart, K-Mart, & Target.
Speaking of being banned, the first music video and single, "Moto Psycho" has been banned on
MTV & VH1 claiming that the video portrays gratuitous sex and violence. (I've seen the video
and I wonder what they were all smoking.)
The opening track, "Disconnect" pretty much sets the mood for the rest of the CD and takes
us back into the familiar speed and thrash metal we all grew up on, followed by another great
anti-government song titled "The World Needs A Hero."
Probably the strongest tune and my personal favorite on the CD is "Burning Bridges." In this
song, Mustaine resorts back to his screeching found on Rust in Peace and Countdown to
Extinction and Jimmy DeGrasso gets to unleash hell behind the skins. The pissed off, revenge
seeking metal madmen are definitely back with songs, "When," "Recipe for HateWarhorse," and
"Dread and the Fugitive Mind."
Another surprise to all long time fans is "Return to Hangar" where they get to revisit the
infamous Hagar 18 in the long awaited sequel. The lyrics are quite similar and it keeps the
original chorus. However, the major difference in the song is the hell bent ending, where
Mustaine wanted to make a statement.
Mustaine establishes himself as one of the world's best guitarists even after nine full
length albums and Al Pitrelli gets a chance to show the world what he's capable of by taking
over where Marty Friedman left off. In fact, they collaborated on the song "Promises,"
which is a slow and catchy tune about a couple who can never be together in this world but
who will meet up in the after life. This is the CD to get for all diehard Megadeth fans,
this I promise you!
