We caught up with rapper/singer/songwriter Marty James, the man behind Scapegoat Wax,
after his live sold-out show at the El Rey in Los Angeles, CA. If you love what you do,
it mirrors your performance while on stage. That's exactly apparent at a Scapegoat Wax show.
Packed with plenty of musical genres including Funk, Hip-Hop, Rock, & Blues, Scapegoat Wax is
not your average commercial band. If you like "Aisle 10 (Hello Allison)" you'll be
amazingly surprised at what the rest of "OKEEBLOW" has to offer.
Noize Pollution: So, who came up with the name?
Marty James: Basically, Scapegoat Wax is just me and I have some friends who are musicians come and tour.
Friends to jobs- jobs to friends. But we used to be called the Scapegoats, but another band
had rights to the name, so we changed it to Scapegoat Wax because it sounded good.
NP: How did you come up with the name of your record "Okeeblow"?
MJ: Well I'm from a northern-small town, CA way out in the sticks. That's where the Okee comes from
and blow, well that's just blowing snot without a tissue. It's a combination of both.
NP: For the Noize Pollution reps out there that haven't yet heard of you- how would you describe your
sound to them?
MJ: Well, it differs from song to song. Some songs are very beat heavy, others are more melodic,
and others use samples. It has a funk music feel to it mixed with hip-hop.
NP: What are some of your musical inspirations?
MJ: Let's see, Prince, Public EnemyI love the way they use samples, they take the best parts from
good music and mix it all together and Queens of the Stone Age are a couple of good ones.
NP: So the original "Okeeblow" was released in June on Grand Royal?
MJ: Yes, but Grand Royal Records obviously folded and then I got picked up by Hollywood Records.
The new "Okeeblow" will be out on Hollywood in the Spring of 2002.
NP: How crazy is it to see "Aisle 10" on MTV?
MJ: It's a great experience. I just hope people like it.
NP: (This is where we asked NoizePollution teamers who have Scapegoat Wax in their top 10 lists to email us their
questions and here are a few that we picked)
NP Teamer-Cynthia Ickes from San Diego, CA: Is there really an Allison on aisle 10?
MJ: Yes, definitely, there was an Allison, but she was never in Aisle 10. You see, I used to work
in a dead end job at a video store and she used to come in all the time. She was hot! I wanted
"Aisle 10" to rhyme with her name so I changed the setting from a video store to a grocery
store. The song still works. She wouldn't go out with me, I think I just creeped her out.
NP Teamer-Cynthia Ickes from San Diego, CA: What is
the first thing you want your fans to get out of your music?
MJ: Something that they care about. Enjoy it. I want the listeners to get a feel for each song
and really grasp onto the ideas behind them. All of my songs come from something that happened
to me so they come straight from the heart.
