Here are some interesting facts about the band: -Ankla is the brain child of Ramon Ortiz guitarist of Puya -Ankla means anchor in Spanish -The band recently opened a show for Skinlab, Primer 55 & Dope -Currently releasing a 7 song EP recorded and produced by Soulfly's Roy Mayorga. -Plan on touring Puerto Rico and Brazil in the near future "Ankla came out of the gate swinging and never let up in a 12 round fight. Soulfly, Puya and Ill Nino would all be proud! A must see live band!" T-BoneGuitarist Ramon Ortiz rocketed his former Latin-metal band Puya to a level of becoming an established latin icon. Popular in North and South America, and famous in their native Puerto Rico, they are heralded as the most successful group to come out of the island. Puya was a recipient of the Latin Billboard Award for Best Rock Fusion Album of 1999, and the first Spanish-singing group to play at the infamous Ozzfest Summer Music Festival, proof that Ortiz' musical exploration during the ninties, set fertile soil for ethnically influenced rock groups to come such as Ill Nino and System of a Down. Turning his musical dream up a notch, Ortiz is preparing to launch his new band ANKLA. Meaning anchor in Spanish, Ankla represents a new musical vision deeply anchored in Ortiz' love for extreme forms of metal music. Ultra heavy in its nature, Ankla is a modern day, true metal band with an old school attitude. While borrowing traditional elements from thrash, death, and hardcore metal, the band still explores and incorporates some of the Latin claves and syncopations that Ortiz has been Known for, without ever losing aggression in the sound. ![]() The result is a new hybrid form of power groove that feeds off of many sources. This is due in part to Ramon's lifelong study (and teaching)of diverse styles of music, his cultural background, and his determination to thread it all together with metallic brutality. In contrast to many contemporary bands, Ankla has a multi-dimensional wall of sound that is intended to play a major role in the evolution of modern metal and stir sick mosh pits. The band consists of Puertorrican guitarist Ramon Ortiz, Brazilian vocalist Ikaro Stafford, and L.A locals J.J. McNeal on bass, Danny Estrada on drums and Anthony Jiemenez on percussions. Currently releasing a 7 song EP recorded and produced by Soulfly's Roy Mayorga. Future plans include end of 2002 tours in Puerto Rico and Brazil as part of a strategic plan to conquer South, Central, and North America... Suelta el Ankla! Be prepared... |
