Here are some interesting facts about the band: -Hemlock will join the Hatebreed tour through the end of March. -Hemlock has been touring with Slaves on Dope recently. -Soulfly's Mikey Doling produced Hemlock's debut CD -Doling describes Hemlock's music as "real aggressive with a sense of humor. It's just rowdy, fun & exciting." -The Agency Group International (who represents and books Slipknot, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Mudvayne, & Sevendust to name a few) has welcomed Hemlock to their family. -Roadrunner Records have had their eye on Hemlock. -Hemlock has a variety of items for sale including Baby Dolls, T-shirts, Hoodies, Windbreakers, Posters, stickers, antenna balls, cologne, perfume, snow globes, & lunch boxes. After eight years together, Hemlock finally found some honor in its hometown. The four filthy-looking men, who perform uncompromising, heavy, raw, and violently hard metal music, felt like they'd finally taken it to the next level. At last, they made it to the Strip--headliners at the House of Blues. It was April 13 and 1,200 fans showed up at the all-ages show and proved--in a dramatic and very public way--what had long been whispered about in Vegas music circles: Hemlock draws an unbelievably large audience. It's also a fiercely dedicated one. Some fans traveled from as far as New Mexico; others came in from Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona and California. The kids sang along with all the old songs and, before departing, they collectively plunked down $2,800 for merchandise that included Hemlock lunch boxes, Hemlock antenna balls, Hemlock snow globes, Hemlock candles, Hemlock key chains and even some Hemlock perfume. "So this is what it feels like to be in love. We love every single one of you," declared Hemlock's singer and bass player, Chad Smith, 23. Smith then dedicated "Kill Your Children" to long-time fans. "This one is about me; this one is about you. It's about every single one of us, because it's about broken families." The song is a crowd favorite, and as the moshers run amok, Smith, one hand on the mic, and the other smacking at his bass, howls, yells and bellows. On occasion, he uses two hands on the instrument: He simply puts the microphone in his mouth and continues to belt out growls of bitter accusation. "We started Hemlock in 1993. I was 15 and my brother was 17," Chad remembers. "We were young. We just got inspired by all the bands we saw and wanted to be. We wanted to jam, have a band and a musical outlet. It was started more as fun, but we realized that we wanted to be serious." Hemlock are four guys who have spent a lifetime around the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. But they aren't impressed by it. At the heart of the band are two brothers: Chad and Brian Smith. No surprise that the two truly are an n'synch rhythm section, though the way Chad plays a bass would probably give Rush's Geddy Lee a stroke. Guitar players Mike Johns and DJ, both started out as techs, before becoming actual members of their favorite band. Mike's backing vocals have become a distinctive part of the Hemlock sound. DJ, of course, is the member of Hemlock known for never shying away from a dare: no matter how disgusting. "Hemlock is crazy, heavy, ugly and they kill it. We love them," says B.C. of (Hed)PE Hemlock have other fans as well including Mikey Doling of Snot & Soulfly!!! who signed on to produce the group's soon to be released CD PIGEON HOLED. The songs from the sessions--which took place this summer in Malibu, CA. Have based on demos, already attracted serious interest from the major labels. But no matter who winds up signing Hemlock, the band still intends to make the new music available to fans ASAP, old style, by putting out a special limited edition which will be available at shows and in stores. Hemlock are committed to their music and fans no matter what the cost. In the end, all these guys want out of life is to be the greatest band in the world. And, oh, yes, if it ain't too much to ask: they wouldn't mind, also, watching the occasional porn. .....Thanks to Richard Abowitz for the Hemlock bio |
